BALLARE
Inspirations for Arany Ballads / The Girl Made to Dance till Death

‘Ballad’ and ‘dance’ are inseparable concepts, since the word ‘ballad’ comes from the verb ‘ballare’, which means to dance, hence the title of our production. The first part of the performance involves seven choreographers inspired by János Arany, who was born 200 years ago. In the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble’s creative workshop, they use the language and tolls of dance to talk about their thoughts about János Arany’s ballads inspired by folk poetry

Zoltán Zsuráfszky: Consecration of the Bridge
Zsuzsa Zs Vincze: The Sin… (On the basis of János Arany’s Mistress Agnes)
Gergő Sánta: The Soldier’s Widow
Tókos Joseph: Becky Scarlet
János Appelshoffer: Corn Husking
Zoltán Zsuráfszky Jr.: The fair
Kristóf Fundák: Ordeal by Blood

Composers: Gábor Gera, Ferenc Kiss, László Rossa, Dániel Szabó
Director: Zoltán Zsuráfszky

THE GIRL MADE TO DANCE TIL DEATH

The second part of the program is an adaptation of a folk ballad by Zsuzsa Zs Vincze, commissioned by the American film director, Endre Hules. Vincze used the wonderful elements of Hungarian folk poetry, superstitions and traditions when writing the script to this dance-play. Zoltán Zsuráfszky, the director and choreographer of this piece made the dance-play based on a folk ballad memorable by adding the language of Hungarian folk dance, as well as original dances and dramatic moments.

Screenplay, editing: Zsuzsa Zs Vincze
Composer: Ferenc Kiss
Director-choreographer: Zoltán Zsuráfszky
