Romeo and Juliet

Győri Balett

A Ballet by György Vámos Based on William Shakespeare’s Play

The choreographer blended the traditions of classical ballet with Prokofiev’s perfectionism by setting the renaissance piece in the 1920s, in order to “present human emotions on stage”. Vámos wants dancing actors who speak and sing with their bodies. For him, Romeo and Juliet are two youths who are carefree and a bit naive at the start, but who are also able to experience devastatingly passionate emotions which then lead to tragedy. Vámos does not present a dreamy, dancing couple, but two powerful personalities with a zest for life, who are strong enough to love and to die.
